The City of Nixon has issued an ordinance, effective Monday, April 11, no longer allowing mobile homes within the city limits.

This ban will include Morgan buildings, CONEX (Container Express) shipping containers and mobile storage containers to be lived in. This will not include modular homes at this time.

According to the city, a mobile home is a prefabricated structure, built completely and fully assembled in a factory on a permanently attached chassis, before being transported to a site. However, a modular home is built to the same local, county and state building codes as a site-built home. While it may be built up to 80 to 90 percent completion in a factory, it arrives at a job site in multiple pieces and is assembled on site on a foundation.

Nixon City Manager Harold Rice said any existing mobile buildings already in place prior to passage of the ordinance will be grandfathered in; however, once they have been altered or changed in any way, they then come under this ordinance.

This ordinance mirrors one in place for Gonzales and one likewise proposed for Smiley at the time of publication.

The next Nixon City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 9.
